Ministry of Presence

Cultivating Compassionate Support in the Heart of the Community
The “ministry of presence” is a foundational concept in spiritual care and chaplaincy that emphasizes simply being with individuals during times of need, crisis, or transition. Rather than focusing on preaching, proselytizing, or offering immediate solutions, this approach is about offering a compassionate, attentive, and non-judgmental presence. It is rooted in the belief that healing and support often begin with genuine human connection and active listening.

At Carlington Community Connection, the ministry of presence means the chaplain and volunteers are available to accompany community members through their challenges, joys, and sorrows. This presence is not about fixing problems, but about standing alongside individuals, affirming their dignity, and providing emotional and spiritual support as needed.

Key Elements of the Ministry of Presence

  • Active Listening: The Chaplain and volunteers prioritize hearing people’s stories without judgment or interruption, validating their experiences and emotions.
  • Non-Anxious Presence: By remaining calm and centred, the chaplain and volunteers help create a safe space for others to express grief, fear, or hope.
  • Confidentiality and Trust: Building trust is essential. The Chaplains and volunteers ensure privacy and respect for personal boundaries.
  • Inclusivity: The ministry is open to people of all backgrounds, faith traditions, and beliefs, reflecting the diversity of the Carlington neighbourhood.
  • Spiritual Support: When invited, the chaplain and volunteers may offer prayer, rituals, or spiritual resources tailored to the individual’s needs and preferences.

Chaplaincy Strategy at Carlington Community Connection

The chaplaincy strategy at Carlington Community Connection is designed to integrate spiritual care into the broader mission of community connection, wellness and resilience. The strategy is collaborative, flexible, and responsive to the evolving needs of the neighbourhood.

Strategic Priorities
  1. Accessibility: The Chaplain and volunteers maintains regular hours at the drop-in, social circles, programs and special events, ensuring their support is visible and accessible to all who may need it.
  2. Collaboration: Working closely with social workers, health care providers, and other community partners, the chaplain and volunteers help address the holistic needs of individuals and families.
  3. Training and Development: The Chaplain and volunteers receive ongoing training in trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and ethical practice to serve a diverse population effectively.
  4. Crisis Response: Chaplains are prepared to respond to community crises—such as sudden losses, violence, or disasters—by offering immediate emotional and spiritual first aid.
  5. Community Building: Through group activities, grief support, and spiritual discussion circles, chaplains foster a sense of belonging and mutual support within the Carlington community.

Measuring Impact

The effectiveness of the ministry of presence and chaplaincy strategy is evaluated through ongoing feedback from community members, program staff, and partners. Success is reflected in increased trust, resilience, and a sense of connectedness among those served.

At Carlington Community Connection, the ministry of presence and chaplaincy strategy work hand-in-hand to offer compassionate, holistic support. By prioritizing attentive presence, inclusivity, and collaboration, the chaplaincy team embodies the values of empathy and solidarity, helping to nurture hope and healing in the community.
